Sometimes diarrhea is nothing to worry about. Causes of diarrhea can range from stomach flu from a meal or just an ingredient you ate was not properly digested. Other soft foods that can be taken for consumption include:

  • Boiled potatoes
  • Toast

What Foods to Avoid?

As important as it is to know what to eat when you are free from diarrhea, it is equally important to know the foods that should be avoided. Certain foods can travel through your intestines too quickly and aggravate your condition, or worsen diarrhea in other ways.

Avoid Synthesized Food For Relief Of Diarrhea

  1. Fatty foods: These include fried foods and foods, which are made greasy or covered in sauce, which can worsen diarrhea.
  2. Milk, butter, cream and cheese: Even if the diarrhea is not caused by lactose intolerance (trouble processing sugar lactose, found in dairy products), stay away from these foods. You may be temporarily sensitive to dairy products, even if you have no problem with them usually. Probiotic yogurt rich foods may be the only exception to this rule.
  3. Alcohol and caffeinated beverages: When you have diarrhea, you want to avoid foods and drinks which cause you to lose fluids. Alcohol and caffeine can act as diuretics – they cause dehydration and should be avoided.
  4. Food causing excess gas: It is important you eat generous amounts of fruits and vegetables every day. However, when diarrhea strikes, you have to avoid foods which are likely to increase intestinal gas like cabbage, beans, broccoli and cauliflower until you feel better.
  5. Food that may be contaminated: Avoid foods  that may have been kept in cold storage for long periods of time. The raw meat or fish can be problematic, too. Follow the old proverb,”if in doubt, throw it out” and you may save some stomach distress.

Other Strategies For Diarrhea

One of the most serious complications of diarrhea is dehydration. To stay hydrated, you should consume enough fluid to get plenty of clear urine.

In terms of treatment of diarrhea, if you have an infection and in doubt, you can take over-the-counter loperamide (Imodium: as Kaopectate Caplet, Maalox and antidiarrheal) to slow bowel movements. This type of medicine should only be taken for a day or two.

If symptoms persist for more than a few days and include bleeding, gas and bloating, then you should see your doctor. Your doctor may determine whether your diarrhea is serious, and may recommend treatment.

These things help you feel better when you have diarrhea:

  • Drink 8-10 glasses of clear liquids every day. Water is better.
  • Drink every time you have a loose bowel at least one cup of liquid.
  • Eat small meals throughout the day instead of three large meals.
  • Eat salty foods such as cookies, soups and sports drinks.
  • Eat foods rich in potassium; bananas, peeled potatoes and fruit juices.

Ask your doctor before taking a multivitamin drink or sports drinks to your diet.  Your doctor may recommend a special medicine/diet for diarrhea based on your medical history and circumstances.

What Do You Eat When You Have Diarrhea?

You can bake or roast beef, pork, chicken, fish or turkey. Boiled eggs are beneficial. Use low-fat milk, cheese and yogurt. If you have severe diarrhea, you must stop eating or drinking dairy products for a few days.

You can have products made of refined white flour bread. Pasta, rice and grains such as wheat, cream, flour, oats and cereals are good. You can also try the pancakes and waffles made with white flour and corn bread. But do not add too much honey or syrup.

You should eat vegetables, including carrots, green beans, mushrooms, beets, asparagus, squash, peeled and zucchini. Cook it first. Baked potatoes are fine. In general, removing the seeds and skins are better. Some delicious appetizers and desserts include gelatin, ice-lollies, cakes, cookies, or sorbet.

What Should You Avoid Eating Or Drinking?

  • To avoid diarrhea you have to get rid of certain food items, including fried foods and fatty foods.
  • Avoid fruits and vegetables that can actually cause gas: broccoli, peppers, beans, peas, strawberries, plums, beans, green leafy vegetables, and corn.
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol and soft drinks.

Limit cottage cheese and other dairy products which can aggravate diarrhea and cause flatulence, bloating and other severe problems.

When To Call The Doctor?

Call your doctor when:

  • Diarrhea worsens or does not improve within two days for a child, or five days for adults
  • The smell of feces or unusual color
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Blood or mucus in the stool
  • A fever does not go away
  • Stomach pain

In Chronic Diarrhea:

While diarrhea is a  easy-to-solve challenge, chronic diarrhea – is very different.  Ascertaining the cause of gastrointestinal problems of a patient may take some research, because many factors as food or some medicines can cause diarrhea. People who have this kind of chronic or recurrent diarrhea need to see a doctor to make sure it is not a medical condition and take specific treatment.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common problem. Episodes of diarrhea have been described as “violent” – and often alternating with constipation. According to research, the colon will be hypersensitive, and simple stimulation can lead to spasms.

The best way to stay from diarrhea is to stay fit by indulging in any kind of physical activity such as walking, running, jogging or participating in a martial art like Aiki Jujitsu. Exercise keeps your body toned and fit so that you can take part in leisure activities, perform excellent work at home and office in a positive attitude. The importance of mental and social benefits of exercising regularly every day have been well-documented by scientists.
